Academic Success on Abbey Manchester’s Unique Programme

5th August 21

Abbey College Manchester is celebrating the success of its unique Combined Studies Programme and a 100% overall pass rate, with one high-performing student, Wesaal, achieving an outstanding 90%.

Offering an exciting alternative to A-Levels, the college’s Combined Studies Programme provides a direct pathway to a university degree or a degree with foundation year at selected partner universities. Following her accomplishment Wesaal, who studied on the science pathway of the programme, has secured a much-coveted place at Keele University to read Biology.

Undertaken over one or two years, the innovative course comprises of a compulsory key skills unit and two optional subject strands with subjects including business, finance, economics, engineering, science, environmental science, humanities, sport and creative arts.  Alongside subject content, students have the invaluable opportunity to develop language, knowledge, ICT and learning skills – essential skills for degree level study.

Commenting on her experience Wesaal said, “The unique environment at Abbey College Manchester is what I love the most. All staff are extremely friendly and welcoming to speak to, enabling me to express any worries or questions I have. When I first joined the college, I was unconfident with the process of applying to universities, as I had been out of school for three years and studying independently. The Combined Studies Programme was truly the best option and I am grateful that the college provides this.

“In one year, through the Combined Studies Programme I was able to apply, receive offers and grow in confidence. I’m excited to move onto the next chapter of my academic journey.”

Principal, Liz Elam, commented: “We are very proud of Wesaal and all students on our Combined Studies Programme, and are delighted that this offering, which is exclusive to our college, is becoming an increasingly popular option.

“Here at Abbey College Manchester, we have a strong track record of guiding our students to academic success and are committed to ensuring that they gain places on the best and most appropriate course, and that they are equipped with the skills needed to thrive at university. We are excited to continue building on this programme further and seeing our students progress.”

In recent years, Combined Studies students have gone on to study a range of courses at a number of prestigious universities such as Biomedical Science at Salford University, Real Estate at Nottingham Trent, Business with Finance at Liverpool John Moores and Computer Science at Keele University.
